Wey Day

Besides various events throughout the year, such as firework parties, bonfires by the riverbank, Treat-or-Treating when the kiddies go door-to-door dressed up in scary costumes, most years the estate holds a day for the residents called 'Wey Day'.

To give an idea as to what goes on, below is the flyer which went round to Weymede Residents inviting them to the event in 2005:

Your Weymede Neighbours invite you

to join in the fun at…

WEY (Family / Fun) DAY

9th September, £5 donation per household, on the gate.

Dear Fellow Residents

It looked as though 'Wey Day' would be cancelled due to heavy commitments of committee members and a vacant ‘Community Affairs’ position.  As a result, some of your neighbours have teamed up with the committee to ensure we have a celebration of sorts, to say farewell to the summer.

To be held on the 9th of September down by the Riverbank, it is our hope this will bring new life to the event and attract more interest and participation.

We took to planning this event with limited time and with the aim of keeping the costs to a minimum, allowing more resident involvement.  With this, we would like to invite you to bring your own BBQ’s, picnics, gazebos, table and chairs as desired for an evening social at the Rivers edge.  There will be some teenagers to help those requiring extra hands for the task.

Activities to include:

2:00pm: Poster contest for the children. (Riverbank gate green) Paper and art supplies provided. The posters will be secured to the fence, judged and serve as festive decoration for the event.  A prize will be awarded.

After 2 pm: Painshill Fire Brigade will arrive with an engine (near the riverbank green) for the children to climb around and explore. The fire fighters may give a small demonstration and discuss fire safety with the children.

BOUNCY CASTLE for children 0-12 years of age.

Games and activities for children of all ages (prizes to be given out to the children)

3 Legged Race                                 Water Balloon Toss

Egg & Spoon Race                           Sack Race

Rounders                                         Badminton

Fairy Cake Decorating (.20p ea.)     Marquee / Gazebo decorating contest (as in the past)

Mr Whippy driver will be here to sell ice cream in the afternoon, so save your pennies kids.

The concept of Weyday is so unique and seldom seen in UK neighbourhoods.  It is only through working together that we can continue to improve on previous years. We still need people to assist with next day riverside clean-up. Please contact HN 71 to give your support in this and any other ways possible.

(Health and safely issues will always be taken into consideration).

Saturday 9th July 2005

Weymede held its annual 'Wey Day' on Saturday 9th July 2005. The idea behind this event is to bring the residents together for an evening of fun and entertainment.

As you can see by the pictures its aim was achieved. The weather stayed good for us and we were treated to a Hog roast, Burgers, Sausages, a wonderful vegetarian lasagne and paella and a variety of Salads. There was a Cheese Board with fruit that any French restaurant would have been proud of and to top it all off lashings of ice cream for dessert.

The live entertainment was supplied at short notice by a vocalist all the way from Somerset and music played into the early hours giving everyone the opportunity to dance off some of those calories; with some of the older generations strutting their stuff and showing the younger ones how to do it.

Many joined in with the fun and frolics and came up with some very inventive ideas for the Wackiest Gazebo Competition; but the Judges decision was final. It was a close competition and although the prize was two bottles of Champagne, it was decided to share them between the two best entries. The first gazebo was a wonderful Hawaiian theme and the second had flashing lights and Christmas decorations. Everyone agreed, in the spirit of the event, that a shared prize was best.

Congratulations were given to everyone on the Committee for all their hard work in bringing the event together. From setting up the marquees and lighting to selling the tickets. With special thanks to Stefanie, the Society's Secretary, for all her hard work in providing all the wonderful food and to Tim, the Chairman, for getting up so early to prepare and cook the Hog roast. Everyone pulled together to make sure that the residents had as good a time as possible.

Life gives us busy schedules, but we all look forward to next years event to be able to catch up again with our neighbours, relax, chill and have some good old fashioned fun.

Below are a few pictures from last year's event.
